You know that feeling when you’re so excited about a new toy that you can’t wait to play with it? That’s exactly how we felt when we decided to add 3D printing to our service lineup. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t all smooth sailing, but boy, was it worth it!
The “What Could Go Wrong?” Phase
Our journey began with what we now know was dangerously misleading success. You know the Benchy – that cute little 3D printed boat that’s basically a rite of passage in the printing world? Well, ours came out PERFECT. First try. We’re talking pristine bridges, flawless overhangs, not a layer line in sight. We were practically high-fiving ourselves, convinced we were 3D printing prodigies.
Oh, how the universe loves to humble us. Everything after that perfect Benchy was a reality check of epic proportions. Our attempt at printing a decorative light box turned into what we now lovingly call “The Colander” – it had more holes than Swiss cheese at a shooting range. Turns out, those “support settings” actually matter! We kept it anyway, and on particularly rough days, we turn on the light inside to create a surprisingly gorgeous constellation effect on the ceiling. Hey, sometimes your biggest mistakes turn into accidental masterpieces (though we still haven’t figured out how to market “deliberately defective” as a feature).
The Learning Curve (More Like a Learning Roller Coaster)
We’d heard horror stories about 3D printing – tales of endless calibration and printers that needed more adjustment than a teenager’s braces. But we must have done something right in a past life, because our choice of printer (the trusty [Bambu Lab P1S]) came with all the bells and whistles. Auto bed leveling? Check. Touch screen interface? You bet. Built-in Wi-Fi? Of course! It was like jumping straight to the luxury package without experiencing the base model struggles.
But here’s the thing about having a smart printer – it lulls you into a false sense of security. Sure, it could level itself, but that didn’t stop us from discovering whole new ways to mess things up. Like the time we learned about print temperatures the hard way, creating what we now call “The Great Plastic Waterfall of 2023.” Or when we discovered that “estimated print time” is more of a suggestion than a promise. Four hours, four days… what’s the difference, really?
Our office whiteboard became a collection of mysterious terms and settings that looked like some sort of secret code. And let’s not forget the evening when our printer door decided to spontaneously explode – turns out tempered glass can be quite dramatic! One minute we were admiring a print in progress, the next we were surrounded by tiny glass crystals (and learning that safety enclosures are more than just for show).
The Great Christmas Challenge
Here’s where things got interesting. As we got better at this whole 3D printing thing, we had a brilliant (or wild) idea: everyone in the family would get something 3D printed for Christmas. What followed was a month-long printing marathon that taught us more than we ever expected.
The kids got dragon eggs that ended up being more ostrich-sized than dragon-sized (but hey, who’s to say how big dragon eggs really are?), along with fierce dragons that guarded their bedroom doors. We handed out 3D printed kit cards at Christmas dinner that turned into delightful crafting chaos – nothing brings family together like puzzle-piecing a tiny reindeer together after too much turkey. And then there was the lithophane… a captured moment of Mum and Dad beaming at the camera on their favorite beach holiday. When we held it up to the light, there they were – sun-kissed and laughing, waves crashing behind them. That print took us six attempts to get perfect, but seeing that memory come to life in a whole new way made every failed print worth it. (Want to turn your own precious memories into lithophanes? [Check out our custom photo printing service here].)
What we Learned (Besides How to Unclog a Nozzle)
Through all the trials, tribulations, and triumphs, we’ve discovered that 3D printing isn’t just about creating objects – it’s about problem-solving, patience, and endless possibilities. We’ve learned to:
- Embrace the fails (they make the best stories)
- Never start a complex print before leaving for the day (trust us on this one)
- Keep a “victory shelf” of both successes and entertaining failures
- Always have spare filament (we swear by [ELEGOO PLA] – it hasn’t let us down yet)
What This Means for You
Now that we’ve gotten past the “interesting” learning phase, we’re excited to offer 3D printing services to our wonderful customers! Whether you need prototypes, custom parts, or unique gifts, we’ve got the experience (and battle scars) to bring your ideas to life.
And yes, if you want to hear the full story about the time we accidentally printed bee earrings sized for giants, just ask. We keep one pair hanging on the wall as a reminder that sometimes scale matters (and that bees don’t actually need to be life-sized).
Ready to bring your ideas to life? Drop us a line – we promise we’ve moved well past the spaghetti phase!
P.S. No printers were permanently harmed in the making of this service (though one did receive some stern talks about bed adhesion).
